Shirokuma Café - 04

Trying to explain what makes Shirokuma Café so funny is like trying to…

Well, it’s hard.  But comedy is always hard to explain, and this is funny – at least to me.  Here’s what I laughed especially hard at this week:

  • Penguin-san’s inability to “pinch zoom” his sumafo – and the various ways all the other animals got around the problem
  • Panda-kun explaining to his mother why sumafos are convenient
  • The word “sumafo” Itself.  I love Japanese appropriations of English words – thank goodness for katakana…
  • Penguin-san blogging about his dream date with Penko-san – and then being shocked that Llama-san read it.  As a blogger, I can sympathize here…
  • The whole circuit of the fast-food drive-through, especially Polar Bear’s “I can’t think of a good joke – we’ll come back”
  • Polar Bear’s sad reflection that bad puns are no fun when there’s no one to retort
  • Polar Bear teaching Penguin-san to parallel park by sticking your head out the sunroof, and how to fix a flat by picking up the car and dragging it home
  • A panda eating a bagel.  Don't ask me to explain it...

Yes, the puns were laid on a little too thick this week, even for me.  But the Japanese do love their puns, that’s for sure.  What’s starting to emerge for me is that this show basically works because Polar Bear, Panda and Penguin are so fundamentally different that their personality quirks have almost no overlap – so put them together, and they make a well-rounded comedy whole.  Also, while it’s hardly a revelation to point it out, I’m really enjoying the way these animals are being used to poke fun at the silly, time-wasting distractions of modern life.   The point isn’t so much that it’s absurd for pandas and llamas to be doing most of this stuff – the point is that it’s absurd for anyone to be doing it.

  1. These animals sure have good taste in sumafos but weird ways to use them. I'm surprised Polar Bear's doesn't have a scratch with those claws.
My heart stopped though at those two scenes where Panda dropped it and the second instance breaking it. What a waste.
I liked that part where Mama Panda called Panda's phone and Polar Bear answered it.
The driving part was also amusing, especially that whole drive-through part. She's very patient with them though.
And a bit heavy on puns but that's not a bad thing.
    Another great episode.
Which reminds me, I'd better buy a new battery for my phone.

  2. Thanks for not dropping this. I really love this and have made this the show I "listen" to to chill after a hard day's work and always look forward to reading your thoughts.

I can relate with Panda regarding that phone cover fiasco since I also have this really cute phone cover (Hello Kitty) that have become more precious to me than the phone itself...^_^

I feel a romantic angle coming up for Sasako San or maybe not. It could just be my hopeless romantic side wishing for something unexpected.

  3. Ahaha! I was thinking more of Shirokuma-kun x Sasako-san x that guy-san who picked up the bamboo leaf. Forget I said it. I might get bashed for thinking such unspeakable scenario. ^^/
